During the warm summer months the waters around Naples, Marco Island and the Everglades can glow! Paddles, kayaks, fish, even your hand moving through the water produces a splash of tiny fireworks that makes the water glow. Bioluminescence!
Our waters are the home of single-celled organisms called dinoflagellates. Some of the over 4500 species of dinoflagellates identified; when disturbed, will emit light … this is bioluminescence. If their concentrations are dense enough, the water appears to glow! Sometimes the glow is bright enough to cast shadows in the water! Warmer water typically, hosts greater concentrations and a brighter glow. This is a true "Must Do" experience!
Other animals will emit bioluminescence, as well. Commonly seen critters on these tours are "comb jellies". Disturb the jelly and it will flash! Concentrations of comb jellies vary depending in many factors. Many times we will see both the flash of the combs and the glow of the "dinos". As the water cools, the combs tend to dominate the viewing.
The darker phases of the moon provide the best Bioluminescence viewing. The closer to the new moon and the darker the night, the better viewing conditions will be. Sometimes the viewing is better than other times. As with any outdoor activity in the natural world, it can be hard to predict. Sometimes the glow can be weaker, even though the conditions are "right", simply because of fewer organisms. You can always contact us and we can advise of the conditions. “If we don’t go we won't know", so come on! Let’s go!
Throughout the month, we conduct evening moonlight and full moon trips when the moon is too bright to see bioluminescence. However, an overcast night may result in seeing good bio even during days the moon is bright. Many times bioluminescence is visible in shadows on bright nights.
Please know that you are responsible for choosing a night with a level of darkness that is acceptable to you.
Please refer to the moonlight calendar. Come have some fun and experience it with us!
Wind down, chill out and enjoy Paradise at its pristine best ... on a kayak tour. Our professional guides and naturalists will work hard so that you get the most out of your experience. Tandem kayaks are used on all the trips with singles available for odd numbers of guests.
Bring a small flashlight or head lamp, shoes that you do not mind getting wet, a light jacket, bug spray if is warm (just in case!), something to drink and a flexible attitude. In the summer, we can have afternoon storms that we sometimes have to "wait out". The rain cools the land, the breezes lighten and the waters calm down making for excellent viewing.
